In today’s fast-paced world, where stress and burnout are common, many people long for a deeper sense of fulfilment. This is where Ikigai—a Japanese concept that translates to “reason for being”—comes into play. More than just a philosophy, Ikigai is a practical framework that helps individuals find purpose, joy, and balance in their lives and careers.
My Journey to Finding Ikigai
For most of my career, I was a business professional, deeply immersed in business and financial management. While I was successful, I often felt a disconnect between my skills, my passions, and the impact I truly wanted to make. The demands of the corporate world, coupled with moments of professional frustration, led me to question whether I was truly thriving—or merely functioning.
This inner conflict ignited my interest in organizational psychology. I pursued further studies, diving into the science of workplace well-being, leadership transformation, and purpose-driven careers. As I applied these insights to my own life, I gradually realized that what I had been searching for all along was my Ikigai—the intersection of what I love, what I’m good at, what the world needs, and what I can potentially earn for a living.
I created my blog, Up-Psyche.com, as a space to explore what I’m passionate about – workplace well-being, leadership, and the psychology behind thriving organizations. My curiosity and desire to bridge the gap between my professional success and personal fulfilment naturally led me to further explore the principles of Ikigai. This journey eventually inspired me to pursue my certification in Ikigai coaching, deepening my understanding of how individuals can align their work with their inner sense of purpose.
While I have not yet started coaching formally, I am deeply passionate about helping others who are seeking their Ikigai. Through my writing, insights, and future offerings, I hope to guide those who, like me, have experienced the challenges of navigating career fulfilment and purpose.
The Meaning of Ikigai
Ikigai (pronounced “ee-kee-guy”) is a combination of four key elements:
- What You Love – Your passions and interests.
- What You Are Good At – Your skills and strengths.
- What the World Needs – The impact you can make.
- What You Can Be Paid For – Your financial sustainability.
At the heart of Ikigai lies the sweet spot where these four elements intersect, leading to a fulfilling and meaningful life.
Debunking Ikigai Myths
- Ikigai is not just about passion – While passion is important, true Ikigai also considers skills, societal impact, and financial viability.
- Ikigai is not only career-related – Your Ikigai can be found in personal relationships, hobbies, or community contributions.
- Ikigai is not a one-time discovery – It evolves as you grow and experience new challenges.
How Ikigai Enhances Well-Being
One of the greatest benefits of discovering Ikigai is the positive impact on well-being. In a world where many feel disengaged at work or uncertain about their life’s direction, Ikigai offers a way to realign with what truly matters. Here’s how it contributes to a healthier, more fulfilling life:
- Reduces Stress and Burnout: When you engage in work that aligns with your Ikigai, it feels less like a burden and more like a calling. This intrinsic motivation fosters resilience and prevents burnout.
- Boosts Mental and Emotional Health: A clear sense of purpose is linked to lower levels of anxiety and depression, as it provides a guiding framework for decision-making and long-term fulfillment.
- Enhances Work-Life Balance: Understanding your Ikigai encourages you to set boundaries and prioritize tasks that contribute to your happiness rather than chasing external expectations.
- Encourages Lifelong Growth: Ikigai fosters a mindset of continuous learning and self-improvement, as individuals naturally seek out opportunities to develop skills that align with their purpose.
- Strengthens Relationships: When you are aligned with your Ikigai, you attract like-minded individuals and form deeper, more meaningful connections with colleagues, friends, and family.
How to Find Your Ikigai
If you’re unsure about your Ikigai, start by asking yourself these questions:
- What activities make me lose track of time?
- What skills come naturally to me?
- What problems do I feel compelled to solve?
- How can I align my career with my values?
